We will be showing “Some Like it Cold” in the context of our Russian Special as an example of how films in Russia intentionally exacerbate the negative public attitude towards gays and lesbians.
“Some Like it Cold” is set as an intricate action comedy during the Olympics in Sochi. Three young men pretend to be women in order to join the Russian women’s snowboard team. The film is modelled on “Some Like it Hot”, the Billy-Wilder-classic with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. In contrast to the US-original from 1959, which treats the gender roles with kindness and a lot of irony, the Russian version is full of clichés.
